Hungary, Budapest – Corinthia Hotel

As the newly-developed Andrássy Avenue was poised to dazzle Budapest during the Millennium Exhibition, the grand opening of the esteemed Grand Hotel Royal took center stage. A beacon of opulence, it swiftly became a cherished haven for local luminaries such as Jenő Heltay, Sándor Hunyadi, Lajos Nagy, and Gyula Krúdy. Boasting a harmonious fusion of cutting-edge amenities and contemporary allure, the magnificent building housed a myriad of delights, including a palm garden, confectioners, a cellar bar, and even a grocery store. Notably, it also captured the attention of the visionary Lumiére brothers, who selected the hotel as the esteemed venue for the inaugural motion picture screening in Budapest. Embracing innovation, the hotel introduced a permanent cinema and enraptured concertgoers with performances conducted by the esteemed Béla Bartók himself. This dedication to progress even extended to the skies, as in 1909, the hotel proudly showcased the very first Hungarian aeroplane.
In 2012, the corridors of Corinthia Hotel Budapest welcomed acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson and his team, who immersed themselves in the wealth of archive materials. Their visit sowed the seeds of inspiration, and a few years later, Anderson's mesmerizing vision came to life, paying homage to the golden age of hospitality with the premiere of The Grand Budapest Hotel. The film effortlessly tapped into a collective nostalgia for a bygone era and further solidified Hollywood's enduring adoration for the picturesque city of Budapest.
