About Sacré-Cœur Basilica
France
The Sacré-Cœur Basilica, located at the highest point in Paris on Montmartre Hill, is a striking Roman Catholic church known for its white domes and panoramic views of the city. Completed in 1914, it was built as a symbol of national penance following the Franco-Prussian War and the subsequent Paris Commune. The basilica’s distinctive Byzantine-Italian Romanesque style stands out among Paris’s more traditional Gothic architecture. Inside, the church is adorned with impressive mosaics, including the largest in France, Christ in Majesty, which covers the apse. You can climb the 300 steps to the dome for stunning vistas of the city, or relax in the peaceful square surrounding the basilica.
