ITALY to SWITZERLAND: Train journey on the iconic Bernina Express
ADELAIDE to ALICE SPRINGS: Train journey on The Ghan

Train travel in Europe is a popular mode of transport for travelling from city to city or between countries.  It is easy, comfortable and offers a faster way to reach your destination.  Some of our favourite European train trips offer guests unmissable panoramic views of the passing scenery.

The Bernina Express is one of them – a highlight on our Italian Lakes and Mountains tour! You can also take it as a day trip option when booking a private tour in the North of Italy and Switzerland. The stunning journey on the iconic Bernina Express follows the historic Rhaetian Railway. Enjoy the twists, turns and loops through incredible landscapes and amazing bridges on this UNESCO World Heritage Listed track.

The Ghan is a 2 day/1 night trip, Adelaide to Alice Springs.  Being all inclusive you will enjoy dining and fine wines, reminiscent of the train journeys of old. In the early morning, alight the train in Marla to watch the sunrise before the journey continues into the Northern Territory.  The scenery will delight you as you travel through the MacDonnell Ranges before arriving at Alice Springs.

LOCARNO, SWITZERLAND: Visit specialty craft stores
ALICE SPRINGS, NT: Discover Aboriginal art in the heart of Aus

Like Locarno has its craft stores, Alice Springs has a reputable Aboriginal art collection in its many galleries.  Dot paintings and water colours tell the story of this great land.  Engage in conversation with real artists in the community art centres as you watch their art come alive.  After, visit Anzac Hill for the best view of Alice.  Catch the sun and the amazing array of colours as it ascends over the town.  Or visit in the late afternoon, where it may be possible to catch a view of a cloudy or raining desert.  Anzac Hill is a memorial, originally dedicated to the people of the armed services that served in World War I, and now a memorial to all that have served.

LAKE COMO, ITALY: Guided sightseeing in Lake Como
ULURU, NT: Walk with a Traditional Owner to learn about Uluru

The glacial Lake Como is a bucket list destination for many travellers worldwide.  It is one of the most recognised and visited spots in Italy outside of the main cities.  Uluru in the Northern Territory is just as well recognised and is another popular bucket list destination.  A great natural wonder of the world, the large monolith is millions of years old.

Uluru, Australia.

The colour of the sandstone is mesmerising as it changes with the light.  Take the opportunity to walk with a Traditional Owner as they share the wisdom and history of this wonderfully spiritual place.  And just like a visit to Lake Como is not complete without a meal at Isola Comacina, your visit to Uluru is not complete without a special ‘Sounds of Silence’ dinner where the story continues under the starry night sky.

LAKE MAGGIORE, ITALY: Deluxe cruise on Lake Maggiore
KAKADU, NT: Boat tour through Kakadu National Park

Continue to Darwin either by train or plane for the last leg of your trip.  A must do is the Kakadu National Park.  On the Italian Lakes & Mountains you would cruise Lake Maggiore but in the Northern Territory you will cruise the billabong, spotting crocodiles and other local wildlife.  The World Heritage listed Kakadu is home to lush rainforests bursting with waterfalls, rocky gorges and swimming holes. You will be delighted with the oldest indigenous rock art in the world.  The spectacular National Park is only 3 hours from Darwin and you can choose to self-drive or join a tour.
